Proposed Dog Breeding Ordinance in Salt Lake County

December 8, 2010
By

There is a news article on KSL.com that states there is a Dog Breeding Ordinance being proposed in Salt Lake County. Have you read the information over? Do you have any input about it? We would love to hear from you.

Link to KSL Article.

In brief, the proposal is for breeders to apply for, and receive, a permit to breed a dog. The goal is to try to stop puppy mills. This ordinance “would require anyone in the unincorporated county to obtain an annual license if they breed more than one litter of dogs during a 12-month period.”

So it would try to force people to let female dogs rest after a littler, and not breed during every heat cycle. Breeders would also have to agree to an inspection of the place they are breeding.

Interesting proposal, we’ll see how it goes.

my husband and i would like to see utah make laws for the best interest of the animal. such as do not allow anyone anywhere to inbreed. if there is such a law already on the books, why are there so many inbreed dogs. if you need proof of the inbreed dogs we would love to give it to you. we lost our 2 yr male akc miniature schnauzer to cluster seizures the vet says was from inbreeding.

Hi Jkel122 thanks for your comment.

Inbreeding is a tricky ground. Many dogs are line bred, which some consider inbreeding, and some do not. Carefully planned litters are very important and making sure all the genetics are good is hard. Finding a good breeder who knows about Inbreeding Coefficients is very important when finding a breeder.
